$2.1 Billion Reasons Why Treasury Federal Budget Analysis Must be Released

The current estimate that the state will be $2.1 billion worse off under the Abbot Federal budget increases the pressure on Treasurer Peter Gutwein, to release the taxpayer-funded Treasury analysis of the expected impacts, following his failure to commit to do when asked to do so in Parliament today, Greens Leader and Treasury spokesperson Kim Booth MP said.

“When asked to provide the date on which he received Treasury’s analysis, and to provide a date for its public release, Mr Gutwein shirked providing specific answers to either query,” Mr Booth said.

Disadvantaged Tasmanians Facing Financial Ruin Through Public Trustee

The government is forcing the Public Trustee to unfairly gouge the wallets of people who are under Administration Orders under the Guardianship and Administration Act 1995, Greens Justice spokesperson Nick McKim MP said today.

“A comparison of fees that are required to be paid by people under Administration Orders in other jurisdictions shows just how deeply the government has its hands in the pockets of some of Tasmania’s most disadvantaged people,” Mr McKim said.

Liberals Silence Over Anti Protest Legal Advice Speaks Volumes

Questions are mounting over the Hodgman government’s ongoing refusal to confirm or deny whether Solicitor-General’s advice was sought on the constitutionality, or other impacts, of the Workplaces (Protection from Protesters) Bill 2014.

“The simple question whether Solicitor-General’s advice has been sought or not by government about this Bill was asked at least nine times over the last two days, during Question Time and debates, and every time it went unanswered,” Greens Justice spokesperson Nick McKim MP said.

Government Needs to Step In to Support Tasmanian Volunteers

The unjustified and unfair impact of the Abbott Government’s new community sector tendering process on Volunteering Tasmania requires a meaningful response from the Hodgman Government, Greens’ Human Services spokesperson, Cassy O’Connor MP, said today.

“The whole community sector across the country and acutely so in Tasmania has been thrown into disarray by the new community grants’ funding process through the Commonwealth Department of Social Services. Less money is being given to fewer providers and, most recently, our volunteers are paying the price.”

The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed the Federal Court’s decision, to uphold the temporary ban on the super trawler, but warned that it was only a stay of execution.

“Our waters will never be safe while the Labor and Liberal parties refuse to support a permanent ban on the super trawler,” Mr Booth said.
