Rockliff Takes Axe to TasTAFE

Minister for Education Jeremy Rockliff has taken the axe to TasTAFE, with over 70 FTE jobs to go as a direct result of his budget cuts.

“Mr Rockliff has cut a massive $7.5 million from the TasTAFE budget over the next 18 months, which will mean a reduction of at least 70 jobs which is well over 10% of the current TasTAFE staff,” said Greens Education spokesperson, Nick McKim MP.

George Williams on Anti-Protest Laws

Noted constitutional law expert Professor George Williams has described the Tasmanian Liberals’ anti-protest legislation as “...on quite shaky constitutional ground”.

“It is no surprise at all that Professor Williams has raised doubts whether Will Hodgman’s draconian laws would survive a high court challenge, because this is some of the most radical legislation the Tasmanian parliament has seen for some time," Greens Justice spokesperson Nick McKim MP said.

Statewide Strategy to Tackle Ice Needed

New Ice Funds Welcome but Won't Prevent Addiction

The allocation of $4.8 million into extra rehabilitation beds for crystal methamphetamine addicts is welcome, but Health Minister, Michael Ferguson, continues to keep his head in the sand about the seriousness of this issue and the need to invest to stop people from taking up the drug in the first place, Greens’ Health spokesperson, Cassy O’Connor MP, said today.

“Minister Ferguson has not delivered an effective strategy to combat the use of ice in our community and the harms it causes to individuals, families and children,” Ms O’Connor said.

Education Minister Must Guarantee Funding for Students with Disabilities

Minister for Education Jeremy Rockliff must guarantee not to reduce funding available to support students with disabilities for the 2015 school year after massive cuts announced by the Liberals in the Commonwealth budget, Tasmanian Greens Education spokesperson Nick McKim said.

"An extra $3m was invested into increasing support for students with disabilities in Tasmanian state schools this year  under the Respectful Schools model, which also featured tagged funding for students with IQs between 55 and 70."

Harriss wasting more public money as he flogs another dead horse

Greens Leader Kim Booth MP today criticised resources Minister, Paul Harriss, for flogging a dead horse with his woodchip enquiry; wasting public money and causing further anxiety for Triabunna residents who welcome the Spring Bay Mill tourism proposal.

“Everybody knows the native forest woodchip industry is dead and gone” said Mr Booth.

Government Must Come Clean On Forestry Exit Funds Fraud and Non-Compliance

Joint Statement with Senator Peter Whish-Wilson

The Greens have called for a halt on further public money being provided to the forestry industry in light of confirmation there has been at least one identified case of fraud, and other instances of non-compliance, with the taxpayer funded Tasmanian Forestry Grants Programs.

"The fact that fraud charges are being considered, that numerous non compliance notices have been made and that a full compliance audit is under way confirms the stench around this controversial process has substance," State Greens Leader and Forestry spokesperson Kim Booth MP said.

Federal Elective Surgery Money Won't Fix Problem

Health Dollars Welcome but a Drop in the Ocean

The announcement of a $23.4 million funding allocation to Tasmania’s public hospitals is welcome but it’s political smoke and mirrors compared with the estimated $1.77 billion that will be carved out of the State’s health budget over the next decade as a result of the Abbott Budget, Greens Health spokesperson, Cassy O’Connor MP, said today.

“The Health Minister desperately needed a good news story in his portfolio in the face of the devastating budget cuts delivered by his federal colleagues, and Peter Dutton has given it to him, but the notion that this money will do anything to repair the damage caused by Canberra’s abandonment of the National Health Reform Agreement and National Partnership on Improving Public Hospital Performance, is frankly, unrealistic,” Ms O’Connor said.

Premier Needs to Propose Alternative to Protect Medicinal Cannabis Users

If the Premier has advice that makes it difficult for the Liberals to support the Misuse of Drugs Amendment Bill 2014, he should release the advice and propose a workable alternative to protect those Tasmanians who currently live in a state of significant legal uncertainty over their medical cannabis use, Greens’ Health spokesperson, Cassy O’Connor MP said today.

“It is reported that Mr Hodgman says it’s unlikely the Liberals will support the Greens’ Amendment Bill because of advice and concerns over people ‘self-medicating’ and the undefined quantities of medical cannabis that may be used in a defence under the Misuse of Drugs Act 2001,” Ms O’Connor said.

The Fix is in: Families to pay for Forestry through their Electricity Bills

Tasmanian families face paying through increased power bills the Liberal Hodgman government’s decision to still prop up Forestry Tasmania.

“The refusal by the Treasurer, Peter Gutwein, to rule out having Transend take on the liability of Forestry Tasmania’s transmission lines to its Southwood site, confirms the worst fears of Tasmanian families that they will end up paying to prop up Forestry through their power bills,” Greens Leader Kim Booth MP said.
