That the House:—

(1) Notes that National Book Week is being held around the country this week with schools and public libraries joining teachers and children to celebrate Australian authors and illustrators and to highlight the importance of reading.

(2) Congratulates the Children’s Book Council of Australia for their ongoing support of Book Week and commitment to enriching the lives and minds of young Australians through literature.

(3) Recognises the importance that:-

(a) reading plays in education for children, particularly in Tasmania where currently the functional literacy rate for adults sits at just 50 per cent; and

(b) a fun environment plays in encouraging children to engage with literacy and that Book Week is the perfect platform.

(4) Acknowledges the many happy faces we are all seeing fill our social media news feeds each day this week as friends and family share pictures of their children dressed as their favourite book character.
