That the House:—
(1) Notes the Government is overseeing a restructure of the Executive of the Tasmanian Health Service, and that this includes the amalgamation of the important representative roles for the Nursing and Midwifery profession and the Allied Health profession with one position to be called the Executive Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health.
(2) Acknowledges that the new position is to be occupied by a senior nurse.
(3) Further notes that concerns have been voiced about the broad scope of this executive position, and the ability of a person in this role to provide representation of the particular needs of the members of each profession and the leadership that these professions require within the Health Service.
(4) Further acknowledges that the Allied Health Profession is large and complex, comprising approximately 25% of the health workforce, with over 20 different professions falling within the category of “allied health professionals”.
(5) Recognises that the nursing and midwifery professions are similarly large and complex.
(6) Calls on the Minister for Health, Hon Minister Ferguson MP, to explain why he has not listened to the concerns of allied health professionals and created a separate Executive Director position for the allied health workforce.
(7) Calls on the Minister for Health to:—
(a) explain why the Executive Director role for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health has been designated to be filled by a nurse, rather than on merit;
(b) explain how his position will not establish a lack of representation for allied health professionals in the Tasmanian Health Service; and
(c) prioritise meeting with a delegation of allied health professionals.
