Cassy O'Connor MP to move—
That the House:—
(1) Notes the commencement on 30 May 2016 of a petition by members of the Royal Automobile Club of Tasmania (RACT) to call a special general meeting of the RACT to raise their concerns with the proposed expansion into Freycinet National Park.
(2) Acknowledges RACT has many reasons to feel let down by the Hodgman Government including:—
(a) the fact the secretive tourism expression of interest process has generated mistrust amongst people living in and around Coles Bay;
(b) the Government’s willingness to change the rules at Freycient to remove longstanding caps on lease size;
(c) the poor drafting of the proposed changes to the Freycinet National Park Management Plan which has opened the entire visitor services zone at Freycinet to development;
(d) the Government’s highly presumptuous decision, made jointly with the Federal Liberal Government, to grant one million dollars of tax payers money to the unapproved Freycinet Lodge expansion; and
(e) that the RACT predicament is entirely the result of the Government's poor process and that the RACT may sadly become emblematic of all that is wrong with the tourism expression of interest process.
(3) Calls on the Government to:—
(a) show the leadership expected of it by requiring developments to play by the rules rather than rewriting the rules to suit developments; and
(b) work with RACT to find a more suitable location to expand its business using a model that is self-sufficient and not reliant on tax payer subsidy and a further intrusion into the Freycinet National Park.
