Andrea Dawkins MP to move—
That the House:—
(1) Notes that:—
(a) the RSPCA’s biggest fundraising event of the year, the Million Paws Walk, was held on 15 May 2016 across the regions of Tasmania; and
(b) approximately 2,000 people and pets braved the inclement weather to show their support and to raise funds for our primary, but underfunded, animal welfare organisation;
(2) Congratulates participants for raising over $5,000 so far to help the fight against animal cruelty and to provide shelter to the thousands of animals surrendered each year to the RSPCA.
(a) that unfortunately, while most Australians are animal lovers and care for their domestic pets and livestock, a small cohort of the community do not fall into this category;
(b) the invaluable work undertaken by the RSPCA to prevent instances of animal cruelty, and to prosecute those responsible, responding nationally to approximately 50,000 instances of animal mistreatment each year, with around 3,500 of those taking place in Tasmania; and
(c) despite the large number of reports of animal mistreatment, currently there are only 5 Inspectors operating in Tasmania, and one Prosecutor, all working hard to deliver the best possible protection of animals in our State.
(4) Calls on the Hodgman Liberal Government to ensure this valuable and imperative service is adequately resourced to undertake the necessary duties to guarantee the ongoing protection of animals in Tasmania and the prosecution of those who perpetrate cruelty against them.
