Ms Dawkins to move—That the House:—
(1) Notes the latest Roy Morgan Poll on the number of Australians embracing a meat free diet has risen from 1.7 Million in 2012 to almost 2.1 Million in 2016.
(2) Further notes that whilst the biggest shift in the trend was in NSW, with a 30% increase, it is Tasmania that continues to have the highest number of people who eat little or no meat in their diet, at 12.7% of the population.
(3) Is surprised to find that according to ‘Google Trends’, Australians top the world rankings of searching for the term vegan with Hobart topping the list of most searches.
(4) Understands that people choose a meat free or little meat diet for health or ethical reasons, more and more people are inclined toward a meat free diet for environmental reasons.
(5) Further notes that:-
(a) not only has there been an increase in non-meat diets but there the survey also found that 53.5% of responders agreed that they are ‘eating less red meat these days’;
(b) Nearly one third of recent arrivals to Australia follow a vegetarian or vegan diet due cultural reasons; and
(c) Notes that November 2016 is World Vegan Month and that for millions of people around the world a cause to celebrate their ethical, environmentally sound, healthy eating choices.
