Andrea Dawkins MP to move—

That the House:—

(1)           Acknowledges:—

(a)           the lack of public support for lowering the school starting age;

(b)           that all the evidence suggests this policy will lead to worse outcomes for children;

(c)           that the Tasmanian Greens have a fully costed alternative Policy to roll out 11 new Child and Family Centres; and

(d)           that this measure, alone, is not a panacea, however the evidence suggests it will contribute to better outcomes for children.

(2)           Calls on the Government to:—

(a)           stop dismissing foreign evidence on the basis that these countries have different systems;

(b)           acknowledge that there is no basis to assume that early formal education starting ages would work in Tasmania where they have not worked elsewhere; and

(c)           adopt the Greens alternative policy as part of a move towards informal, play based preschool education.
