Cassy O'Connor MP to move—
That the House notes with concern:—
(a) the announced closure of the permanent Australian Antarctic Division research station on Macquarie Island;
(b) the impact this will have on not only on Antarctic and Southern Ocean science, but also the aim to “Make Tasmania the gateway to Antarctica”;
(c) the disturbing anti-science trend of the Federal Liberal Government in cutting critical research capacity based in and from Tasmania;
(d) that the State Government was unaware of this issue until it was publicly announced; and
(e) the abject failure of the State Government to stand up to their Federal colleagues in any meaningful way to protect Tasmania's reputation as a hub of Antarctic, Southern Ocean and climate science.
