    Rosalie Woodruff MP to move—

    That the House:—

    (1)           Notes that:—

    (a)           illegal firewood collecting has resulted in the destruction of key nesting habitat at one of the most important locations for the critically endangered swift parrot in Tasmania; and

    (b)           since 2010, 10 out of the 18 nest trees for the swift parrot that Australian National University researchers were monitoring at Buckland have been cut down.

    (1)           Notes:—

    (a)           the recently released results of the second annual Teachers View Survey from the Tasmanian Disability Education Reform Lobby;

    (b)           that over 500 teachers statewide took part in the survey, with a whopping 90 per cent indicating Tasmania’s disability education system is inadequate;

    Cassy O'Connor MP to move—

    That the House:—

    (1)           Notes the United Nations World Heritage Committee's recommendation to resolve the tenure of extensions to the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area that were delivered under the Labor Green Government.

    (2)           Recognises that both the Commonwealth and Tasmanian Governments have agreed to accept all the World Heritage Committee's recommendations in response to the draft World Heritage Area Management Plan.

    Ms DAWKINS (Bass) - Madam Speaker, I rise to correct the record.  I tabled a document which showed that a greyhound called Wee Fire was deceased, but she has been found alive and well in happy retirement, which is excellent news and a really happy story.  I apologise to Amanda Grice and good on her for finding her a home.  I now seek leave to table this document.

    Cassy O'Connor MP to move—

    That the House:—

    (1)           Agrees that the takanya, or Tarkine, is a place of deep cultural significance to Tasmanian Aboriginal people and recognised globally as a region of outstanding cultural value.

    (2)           Recognises that the book 'takanya, country, culture' was launched by the Bob Brown Foundation and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre on Friday 12 August 2016.

    (a)           that National Science Week is being held from 13 to 21 August 2016, celebrating everything science and technology, and will feature over 100 public events and over 200 school events around the State;

    (b)           that the events are designed to attract adults and children alike, and that throughout the week over 1 million people will engage or participate around Australia;

    (1)           Notes that ‘Astacopsis gouldi’, the giant freshwater lobster, is the largest freshwater invertebrate on the planet, and is found only in the northwest and northeast of Tasmania.

    (2)           Acknowledges with great concern the scientific assessment that indicates barely a decade stands between the survival of this amazing large lobster and its extinction.

    In the face of an industry which no longer had a social licence, New South Wales Premier, Mike Baird, took the only course of action he felt he could.  At 3.40 this morning he passed legislation to ban greyhound racing.  A recent RTI listed more than 1600 dead dogs in Tasmania, with 33 in Launceston in one day.  Will you now show that same leadership and put an end to this taxpayer-funded cruelty?

    Andrea Dawkins MP to move—

    That the House:—

    (1)           Notes:—

    (a)           that although medical admissions at the Launceston General Hospital (LGH) have increased at a rate of 3.5 per month over the 2 years between 2014 and 2016, and that to meet that patient demand 122 beds are required, the number of available beds has remained at 92;

    (b)           that this increased demand has led to medical ward bed shortages and chronic access block;

    (a)           the recently released report from the Regional Australia Institute (RAI) indicating regional Australia is missing out on potential population growth by failing to attract international migrants;

    That the House:—

    (1)           Notes the damage to the Basslink cable and the drought conditions exposed Tasmania’s dependence on dirty coal-fired electricity from the mainland, and the vulnerability of our energy supply.

    (2)           Acknowledges that the Liberal Government’s ‘2015 Tasmanian Energy Strategy’ advocates a hands-off approach to Government leading the renewable energy future for Tasmania, and lacks the detail this State needs to drive investment in our energy system.
