  • Ms WOODRUFF (Franklin) - Madam Speaker, I rise tonight to pay tribute to Doug Duthoit. I read now from a speech which was written by Rene Raichert, who is the Kingborough Council's NRM project officer, and Michael Christie. Rene delivered this speech to the Tasmanian Landcare Awards on 10 October this year. She said:

    There is no doubt that Landcare is filled with that 'special kind of someone'. The commitment and passion embodied within Landcare volunteers leaves those that work in the industry humbled, in awe of what can be and often is achieved by people.

  • 1.     Notes Tasmania has more coastline per unit area than any other state in Australia.

    2.     Notes that about 80–90% of species of most marine groups are endemic to Tasmania, compared to only 10% of species in most groups in northern tropical waters.

    3.     Notes that only 1.1% of Tasmania’s immediate waters are within no-take marine protected areas.

    4.     Calls on the government to expand no-take zones within marine reserve areas based on scientific advice.

    1.     Notes the 2008 Sustainable Infrastructure Australia report to government: Current and Future Controlled Waste Practices in Tasmania, which examines eight options for dealing with hazardous waste.

    2.     Notes the 2004 Landfill Sustainability Guide which states that waste should be reduced or avoided, and where it can’t be, re-use and recycling should be pursued with landfill only used where no other method is feasible.

    3.     Notes that the proposed c-cell facility at Copping is due to begin construction before June 2016.

    1.      The proposed traffic changes as part of the renewal and revitalisation of the Launceston CBD;

    2.      That presently the City is vasty car-centric and that the proposed changes to the traffic system are designed to allow more human-centred activity in the CBD;

    1.      That the scale and frequency of fuel reduction burns have increased from the creation of a buffer zone around certain homes or areas to what is now broadscale incineration involving aerial incendiaries setting fire to regions of forest and bushland;

  • Ms WOODRUFF (Franklin) - Madam Speaker, I rise this evening to talk about the Tasmanian Landcare Awards 2015. I went to the awards presentation dinner the other night in Huonville and it was a fantastic event. A huge number of people turned up; it was a very big do. These happen every two years and this year was fortunately catered for by the staff and trainees of the Huonville Trade Training Centre who did an amazing job providing dinner for at least 80, maybe 100, people.

    1.      The recent visits to Tasmanian households from door-to-door sales people peddling online diploma courses with the lure of a ‘free’ device, such as an iPad, to entice the unwary to sign up to what is eventually a costly venture;
