Health Budget Crisis Looming, Where's Will?

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

The Tasmanian Budget is heading for crisis with an estimated $1.8 billion in Federal cuts to health beginning from 1 July next year. If these cuts aren't reversed, they'll devastate our public hospitals and health services.

The Liberals are back in government in Canberra. Premier Hodgman needs to seek an urgent meeting with the Prime Minister and fight to restore Tasmania's fair share of Federal health funding as he told Tasmanians he would after the first and second harsh Abbott budgets.

Treasurer Wants Tasmanians to Believe He's a Magician

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Treasury spokesperson

The Treasurer, Peter Gutwein, is being dishonest with Tasmanians about the State's budget outlook.  Either that, or he genuinely believes he is a magician.

Unless Mr Gutwein and his Liberal colleagues stop gouging a 90% dividend out of profitable Government Business Enterprises (GBEs) and find a way to cover the $2.1 Billion cuts to Health and Education delivered in the first Abbott Budget, they are likely to oversee one of the most temporary surpluses in living memory.

Preliminary Outcomes Report

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Treasury spokesperson

Treasury's Preliminary Outcomes Report puts the state's finances in a reasonable position, but nobody should believe it is the result of Treasurer Gutwein's genius.

These financial outcomes are the result of the government sacking 1200 public servants in this term, the underfunding of Health and Education, as well as the massive GST windfall coming to the State.
