One Year After Devastating Fires, Sluggish Response from Hodgman Government

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Parks spokesperson

Today marks the grim one year anniversary of bushfires that threatened Tasmanian communities and caused irreparable damage to ancient wilderness landscapes, yet the Hodgman Liberal Government continues to starve the Parks and Wildlife Service of the funds it needs to undertake effective fire management.

Flood Inquiry Welcome, but Ignores Climate Change

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Climate Change spokesperson

The Tasmanian Greens' welcome Minister Hidding's announcement of an inquiry into the State's devastating June floods. We commend the Minister on the appointment of former Auditor General, Mike Blake, to oversee the Inquiry.

We are, however, extremely disappointed the Inquiry won't specifically address the role climate change played in the scale and intensity of the floods, and the growing role it will play in extreme weather events in the future.

Bushfire Inquiry A Whitewash

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens Fire spokesperson

The Bushfire Inquiry findings paint over the devastation of the summer bushfires in the World Heritage Area. It's as though they never existed.

Not one single recommendation in the Committee's report calls to review procedures or respond to climate change. These were two of the key reasons for submitting a dissenting report. *

Because of the Committee's membership, it was always going to be a whitewash but the denial around the need to change our response to bushfire management is mind-boggling.
