Hodgman’s Chickens Coming Home to Roost

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

In the last sitting week of Parliament under the Hodgman Liberals, all the Premier’s chickens are coming home to roost.

After four years of dishonesty and spin, of refusing to accept any responsibility for problems and pointing the finger of blame at others, the Premier still spent all of question time today throwing accusations at the Greens and Labor and being loose with the truth about the circumstances surrounding the resignation of DPaC Secretary, Greg Johannes.

Buck Stops with Hodgman on Conflicts of Interests in State Service

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader

The findings of the Auditor-General's report into the appointment of senior public servants is concerning. It points to an ongoing problem the Liberals have in managing conflicts of interest, and we would support the Auditor-General in referring his report to the Integrity Commission.

Throughout this term of government, the Liberals have shown a disregard for proper process and the avoidance of conflict of interest within their own ranks.  This unhealthy political culture has been a hallmark of Will Hodgman's leadership.

Barnett’s Forestry Jobs Dishonesty

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Forests spokesperson

In the wake of ABS census data confirming a massive decline in forestry sector employment under the Liberals, the Hodgman Government seems to be fudging the numbers.

The latest census shows there are 2,441 jobs in the forestry and wood product manufacturing sectors combined, a 32% decline since the Liberals came to power.

Government Subsidies and Forestry Spin Continue Under Liberals

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Forests spokesperson

Forestry Tasmania’s Annual Report shows the subsidies to native forest logging continue.

The Liberals' promise to end the subsidies to Forestry Tasmania has again been exposed as a lie, with the GBE's annual report revealing taxpayers subsidised a $27 million operational loss.

Minister Barnett’s claim he has the forestry GBE back on a sustainable footing is rubbish.

Barnett's Failure to Deliver

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Forests spokesperson

The latest Forestry Tasmania - now fraudulently named Sustainable Timber Tasmania - Annual Report demonstrates the continued failure of the Liberals’ stated commitment to move the business onto a sustainable footing.

The Forestry business made a Net loss of $42 million, comparable to $44 million the previous year. $27 million more was spent on operations than their wood was sold for.  That means a $27 million taxpayer subsidy in some form or another.

Liberals Refuse to Back Donations Reform

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader

In Parliament today, the Liberals again voted for their own political self-interest and on behalf of their corporate donors, refusing to support donations' reform in Tasmania.

In a week where the Premier has failed to be transparent about a $30 000 donation from a Chinese owned company which ASIO warned about in 2015, it is no surprise the Liberals support the status quo, where voters don't know until 12-18 months after such a donation has been made.

Premier Fails to Condemn Federal Liberals over Manus Island Emergency

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader

Premier Hodgman has failed compassionate Tasmanians by remaining silent about the human rights emergency unfolding on Manus Island.

In Question Time today, the Tasmanian Greens called on the Premier to speak up for the men on Manus, and make a representation to the Acting Prime Minister, Julie Bishop, condemning Immigration Minister Peter Dutton’s inhumanity and demanding the Australian Government take responsibility for the welfare of the desperate men on Manus Island.

Premier Can't Keep Pointing the Finger at McQuestin

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader

Whether it’s on shady donations from foreign owned companies or the Federal Group, or dirty tricks in Pembroke, the Premier simply refuses to take responsibility for the conduct and decisions of the political party he leads.

It has become a hallmark of Will Hodgman’s leadership going back to, and beyond, the Mantach scandal.  Every time the heat is on, he points the finger at someone else.
