Jaensch Misleads over Dorothy Dixers

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader

Braddon Liberal MP, Roger Jaensch is wilfully misleading over Parliamentary practice in the last term of government in order to deflect from the fact that the Liberals have to date asked 261 self-congratulatory Dorothy Dixers in Question Time.

Mr Jaensch has only experienced the arrogance of majority government and was not a Member of the previous Parliament so he could be forgiven for not understanding how a Balance of Power Parliament works.

Government Needs to Explain Road Works Contract

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader and State Growth spokesperson

The government needs to explain why a multi-million dollar contract for road works in Tasmania was awarded to Hazell Bros Group without going through any procurement process.

The Department of State Growth Annual Report released today reveals that Hazell Bros Group was largely unsuccessful in winning competitive tenders for road works in the past financial year, but did receive $4 416 766.96 for Midland Highway, south of Kempton, improvements.

Liberals Vote Against Public Consultation on Public Asset Transfers

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader

The Liberals demonstrated in Parliament this afternoon that they do not support openness and transparency on their plans to sell or giveaway up to 500 Housing Tasmania homes, the Treasury Building, Hunter Street Art School, TasTAFE building, St John St offices in Launceston, Forestry Tasmania's plantation estate and an unknown area of Crown Land.

Crown Land Fire Sale on the Cards

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader

State Growth Minister, Matthew Groom, confirmed by omission in Question Time today that the Office of the Coordinator General has sought and obtained a list of Crown Land properties that can be made available to private developers.

The Minister did not, as requested, make available the list of Crown Lands the Coordinator General is, in all likelihood, currently flashing around the private development fraternity.

Minister Groom also did not acknowledge that these assets belong to the Tasmanian people.

Forestry Tasmania Annual Report Smoke and Mirrors

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader and Forests spokesperson

Forestry Tasmania's Annual Report 2014-15 paints a blithely optimistic picture of the GBE's financial fortunes, glossing over a continuing reliance on public subsidies and bailouts at public expense.

Tasmanians will rightly be wary of the Liberals' claims that their forest 'policy' has turned around the GBE's fortunes, after decades in which FT has been unable to turn a profit and has relied continuously on public subsidies to destroy forest ecosystems.

Dorothy Dix 'Good News' Milestone

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader

The Liberals celebrated their 250th self-congratulatory Dorothy Dix in Question Time today.

This milestone should not have been celebrated, but it's been made very clear by the Liberals that they want their parliament to be one of 'good news', not openness and transparency.

Question Time is an important opportunity for opposition parties to scrutinise the government, but every sitting day we see one third of Question Time dedicated to back slapping and self promotion.

Secrecy Over Selling the Farm Must End

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader

In the past fortnight, Tasmanians have been taken by surprise at the number of public assets the Liberals have put up for potential sale or transfer, behind closed doors through the Office of the Coordinator General.

Just what is the Office of the Coordinator General?  Who is it answerable to? How many unsolicited bids from private developers is it assessing and what public assets are in play?  These are questions we will be asking in Parliament this week.

Fossil Free UTAS Students Show True Grit for Climate

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Climate Change spokesperson

University of Tasmania students staging a sit-in outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office are true climate champions.

Their commitment to ensuring UTAS divests its climate-poisoning fossil-fuel investments is based on the science and ethics.

Like every person on the planet, these young Tasmanians have a right to a safe climate.

On behalf of the Tasmanian Greens and every Tasmanian who believes all our public institutions should invest ethically, I express deep gratitude.

Another Day, Another Handout to Forestry

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader and Forests spokesperson

Another day in Tasmania, another handout to private forestry at public expense.

After late last year redirecting $7M allocated exit funding to keep people in the native forest industry, the Liberals are paying another $1M in compensation to forests contractors.

It's also now well understood that a number of industry players paid taxpayer money to exit native forest logging, pocketed the money and were back at work in the forests shortly after the Liberals took office.

When will this stop?
