Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Human Services spokesperson

Tasmania's Commissioner for Children has expressed concern about the Liberal Government's policy of allowing religious schools to discriminate against students of different religious and cultural backgrounds.

The Commissioner for Children's Annual Report released to Parliament today details correspondence from Commissioner, Mark Morrissey to government querying the impact of the discrimination policy on students.

China Deals Clear as Mud

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

The Liberals pontificated all through question time about their 'open for business' motto but still failed to answer questions about deals with Chinese entities or provide the MOUs that accompany them and have been signed in Tasmania's name.

Hurling insults at the Greens for asking for transparency is a standard stalling tactic, but the Tasmanian people still quite rightly expect to know what is being negotiated and signed in their name.

Our Hearts are Broken

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

On behalf of the Tasmanian Greens' MPs and members, I express our heartfelt sorrow over the events in Paris overnight.

No words can adequately express the sadness being felt around the world right now and here, far from Paris, in Tasmania.

It is terrible times like this that remind us of our shared humanity.

Pokies Poll Places Further Pressure on Government

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Treasury spokesperson

The EMRS opinion poll on poker machines confirms that the overwhelming majority of Tasmanians do not support the proliferation of these addictive machines in our communities.

Tasmanians clearly recognise that pokies are a social and economic poison.

Too many Tasmanians have been hurt by these machines. People have lost their jobs, their families, their homes and tragically, in some cases, their lives.

Lonely Planet Hits Out at Hodgman Government

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Parks spokesperson

The Hodgman Government is damaging Tasmania's wilderness tourism brand internationally.*

Travel Bible Lonely Planet has advised travellers to get in quick or miss out on Tasmania's pristine wilderness, "before compromises are made".

Lonely Planet has told international travellers they need to visit Tasmania before our world renowned wilderness is lost and have laid the blame squarely at the feet of the Liberal government.

Brighton Mayor Tells it Like it Is on Pokies Monopoly

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Treasury spokesperson

Brighton Mayor, Tony Foster, is a strong voice for his community on the issue of the harm caused by poker machines and the Federal Hotels' monopoly gaming Deed.

In a stinging statement released today, Mayor Foster is damning of the harm caused by poker machines in his community and the lack of research on the profound harm caused to low income Tasmanians as a result of the proliferation of poker machines in pubs and clubs in Tasmania.

Jaensch Misleads over Dorothy Dixers

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader

Braddon Liberal MP, Roger Jaensch is wilfully misleading over Parliamentary practice in the last term of government in order to deflect from the fact that the Liberals have to date asked 261 self-congratulatory Dorothy Dixers in Question Time.

Mr Jaensch has only experienced the arrogance of majority government and was not a Member of the previous Parliament so he could be forgiven for not understanding how a Balance of Power Parliament works.

Government Needs to Explain Road Works Contract

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader and State Growth spokesperson

The government needs to explain why a multi-million dollar contract for road works in Tasmania was awarded to Hazell Bros Group without going through any procurement process.

The Department of State Growth Annual Report released today reveals that Hazell Bros Group was largely unsuccessful in winning competitive tenders for road works in the past financial year, but did receive $4 416 766.96 for Midland Highway, south of Kempton, improvements.
