Groom Content to Pillage TWWHA

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Parks spokesperson

The Hodgman Government's passionate desire to log, mine and increase private development in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area not only shows a reckless disregard for its values but also the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

Minister Groom's obfuscating and empty statements about 'traditional industries' in question time reveal a stunning disregard for Tasmania's protected places.

The government's position is clear - they think they are above UNESCO.

Harriss in Denial on TWWHA Logging

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Forests spokesperson

Resources Minister, Paul Harriss, has made it clear the government plans to blunder on and log in protected areas, including the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA), in contravention of explicit advice from the UNESCO World Heritage Committee that to do so would threaten World Heritage values.

Liberals Still in Bed with Federal

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader and Treasury spokesperson

Treasurer Gutwein is failing to stand up for both disadvantaged Tasmanians and the cultural icon, MONA, in his acquiescence to Federal Hotels.

It is great shame for Tasmanians that the Liberals have again sided with their old and tired bedfellows, Federal Hotels.

We are at risk of losing the economic and social benefit of MONA's Robin Hood-eqsue development because this government is entirely beholden to Federals.

Tasmanian Job Figures Encouraging

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

The latest job figures for Tasmania are encouraging and provide growing evidence of economic recovery nationwide.

It is clear that Tasmania continues to make the transition out of a heavily resource extraction based economy to one that is increasingly reaping the benefits our clean green brand.

The good news from today should serve as a reminder that Tasmania’s brand is a great jobs' generator.

Asylum Seekers Welcome, but We Can Do More

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

Prime Minister Abbott's announcement that Australia will take 12,000 new asylum seekers from Syria is very welcome, but as a nation, we can do more.

Welcoming 12,000 asylum seekers from war torn Syria and Iraq is a good start, but sending the military in to bomb Syria will only create more misery, more refugees and fan the fires of terrorism as these ill considered military campaigns have in the past.

Investment in Housing Needed to Meet Local and Refugee Need

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

The Liberals need to invest a sizeable portion of the projected half a billion dollars in GST windfall into the supply of social and affordable housing if we're to provide secure homes for desperate Syrian refugees as well as the almost 3000 Tasmanians currently on the housing waiting list.

If Premier Will Hodgman is serious about housing an expected intake of 500 people fleeing war torn Syria in public housing properties, his government will need to reverse its funding neglect of the portfolio.

Liberal Party: Heads in the Sand on Global Warming

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Climate Change spokesperson

The Liberal Party's best and brightest were on display today at their State Council meeting, with the Huon Branch moving a motion to just keep on emitting carbon dioxide and cross our fingers for the best.

The Liberals showed us their true climate colours today at their State Council meeting, seriously debating whether global warming was reality or just Green propaganda.
