Domain Figures Confirm Escalating Housing Emergency

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader and Housing spokesperson

Hobart rents are now rivalling Melbourne’s, in figures released today by Domain.

New statistics are being released regularly.  They describe a tightening rental market that’s pricing Tasmanians out.

The rental crisis in Hobart is worsening, with fewer affordable rentals available than ever before and families being forced into homelessness. It’s alarming that Hobartians are without a roof over their heads and winter fast approaching.

Time for Transparency and Change in Forestry

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

Senator Janet Rice | Australian Greens’ Forests spokesperson

A damning analysis of the Regional Forest Agreement in today’s The Guardian newspaper is an indictment on both State and Federal Governments.

Economist, John Lawrence’s precise and undisputed numbers prove not only the massive environmental failure of the RFA, but also the obscene past and future financial losses under this Agreement.

Climate Change Ignored in Cabinet Reshuffle

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

The world is getting hotter and extreme weather events are already impacting on Tasmania, yet the Premier has again decided not to reinstate the Climate Change portfolio.

In the last term of government, global warming impacts came home hard to Tasmania.

Devastating drought, bushfires and floods, major biosecurity challenges, rapidly warming East Coast waters, coastal erosion impacts on private property; these are all signs of accelerating climate change.

New Housing Minister Has Urgent Task

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

The Greens congratulate Roger Jaensch MP on his appointment as Minister for Human Services and Housing.

Mr Jaensch faces the most pressing task of any of the newly sworn in Cabinet members - tackling the housing emergency with substantive steps so people aren't freezing in tents at the Hobart Showgrounds over Winter.

Quality temporary housing is urgently required along with regulation required to stem the rapid growth in short stay accommodation which is taking homes out of the market and driving up rents.

Liberals' Foreign Investor Tax Tinkering at the Edges

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

The Liberals are playing catch up on the growing level of foreign ownership and influence in Tasmania.

Tasmanians know foreign investors are impacting on the housing market and that almost 25% of our agricultural land has some level of foreign ownership.

Cashed up overseas buyers are not going to be dissuaded by a small tax hit.  The Liberals' policy will make no difference to housing availability, nor will it mean any less agricultural land ends up in foreign hands.

Greens Commit to Redress Scheme for Victims of Institutional Child Abuse

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

The Premier's refusal to commit to the national redress scheme for victims of past sexual abuse, along with Labor's silence on the issue, are a slap in the face to the estimated 1,750 Tasmanian survivors who would be eligible under the scheme.

The National Redress Scheme was a key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, and now has the commitment of the Federal Government to commence on 1 July next year.

Tasmania Needs a Charter of Human Rights

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

The Greens will bring Tasmanian law into the 21st century and protect Tasmanian individuals and communities with a Charter of Human Rights.

Many Tasmanians falsely believe their rights are inviolably protected by our laws when sadly this is not the case. All too often these rights are trampled by corporations and governments alike.

Last year, the Hodgman Liberal Government went all the way to the High Court in a bid to deny citizens the right to protest. They also tried to water down anti-discrimination laws.

Tasmanian Liberals Rake in Donations, Declare Less than a Quarter

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

The latest Australian Electoral Commission disclosure returns reveal the State Liberals pocketed $2.39 million in political donations in 2016-17, but only declared the sources for $498 000.*

Tasmanians have no idea which vested interests the remaining $1.89 million came from, and that is a taint on our democracy.

The Liberals are the singularly most secretive of all parties when it comes to the corporate sources of their funding.  That is why they continually resist donations' disclosure reform at a State level.

Foreign Ownership and Influence

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

The high level of foreign ownership and growing foreign influence in Tasmania has got people talking across the State.

Almost 25% of our state’s agricultural land is under a level of foreign ownership, and foreign donors are making large donations to the Liberals.

The Greens want to start a rational and respectful conversation about the impact of foreign ownership and influence in Tasmania.
