Commissioner for Children's Report Exposes Urgent Need for Funding

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Human Services spokesperson

The report into Tasmania’s crisis-driven child protection and out of home care system by the Commissioner for Children and Young People demands urgent attention.

For too long, the State has failed vulnerable children and young people in its care.  In some cases, such as the Safe Pathways scandal, the State stands guilty of neglect.

RoGS Reinforces Government's Failure to Keep Vulnerable Children Safe

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Human Services spokesperson

The Report on Government Services (RoGS) chapter on child protection services released today illustrates enduring and serious issues that need to be sensitively examined and addressed.

The report reiterates that investigation timeframes have increased significantly, with potentially highly vulnerable children and young people subject to a notification of risk now waiting far longer for investigation than any other State.

Still Too Many Unanswered Questions on Safe Pathways

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Human Services spokesperson

Five months after concerns were first raised with the government about the treatment of vulnerable children in the care of for-profit provider, Safe Pathways, many questions remain unanswered.

While 11 children have been removed from Safe Pathways following scandalous allegations of neglect of children and young people, the organisation is still apparently operating in Tasmania and Tasmanians are being kept in the dark.

1000 Days in Which Vulnerable Children Have Been Put More At Risk

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Human Services spokesperson

The Liberals sure do have a hide, crowing about their response to vulnerable people over their 1000 days in office.

Their response to the plight of damaged children in the State care system is something they should be ashamed of, rather than boasting about.

Last year, 151 child protection notifications were ignored the North West in an epic failure of the Minister and her Department to respond.

Petrusma's Child Protection Crisis

The Performance Measures for Child Protection in the DHHS Annual Report make it clear the system designed to protect some of Tasmania's most vulnerable children, is in significantly worse shape than it was under the previous government.

Notifications are increasing.  There are four times as many children waiting for an investigative response from Child Protection compared to any time over the past three years.
