State of the State Address in Reply

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

(Please check against delivery)

Madam Speaker,

We meet on the land of an ancient and noble people, land that was taken from them with terrible violence and trickery on the part of the men who came before us.

We do well to remind ourselves often that this land – lutruwita/Tasmania – was never ceded by its original owners.

On behalf of the Tasmanian Greens MPs, I pay respect to the palawa/pakana people of Tasmania, to their treasured elders, past and present.

Children's Commissioner Questions School Discrimination

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Human Services spokesperson

Tasmania's Commissioner for Children has expressed concern about the Liberal Government's policy of allowing religious schools to discriminate against students of different religious and cultural backgrounds.

The Commissioner for Children's Annual Report released to Parliament today details correspondence from Commissioner, Mark Morrissey to government querying the impact of the discrimination policy on students.

Child Protection Review Exposes Lack of Resources

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Human Services spokesperson

The report in to the failure to investigate 151 child protection notifications in the North West has exposed that resourcing is a serious issue for child protection in Tasmania.

The fact that administrative staff were taking notifications of at-risk babies and children in the North West has exposed that poor processes, insufficient resources, staff recruitment, training and management are at the heart of the problem.

Minister Petrusma Gave Us No Choice

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Human Services spokesperson

The three Greens MPs met this morning and agreed that we would keep an open mind on the likely no confidence Motion to be brought on by Labor.

We agreed that we would wait to hear Minister Petrusma's response to a series of questions about how 151 potentially at-risk children were ignored for a lengthy period by Child Protection in the North West.

We were genuinely prepared to give the Minister a chance to explain her lack of timely action on this serious matter.
