March for Science

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader

With conservative governments at the Federal and State level ignoring climate science and overseeing cuts to the State's world class scientific institutions, hundreds of Tasmanians joined the global March for Science today.

Hobart is a globally recognised hub of Antarctic and Southern Ocean science.  Something of which we can be immensely proud, but this expertise and our reputation is under assault at a time when we should be increasing funding of public good science.

Sacking of Dr John Church Heralds New Era of Darkness for Climate Science

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Climate Change spokesperson

In a move that defines the Liberals antagonism towards science and climate research, one of the world's leading climate scientists has been sacked from his job at CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research division in Hobart.

Dr John Church is a global expert in sea level rise, an esteemed and eminent member of the global scientific community. His sacking is a devastating blow to climate science and to Australia's once strong reputation as a climate science leader.

Premier Hodgman Failing to Protect Science Jobs

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Climate Change spokesperson

With the Turnbull Government axing potentially more than 100 Tasmanian CSIRO jobs, it's reasonable to ask whether the Premier is doing anything to stand up for local scientists and protect Tasmania's reputation as a global climate science hub.

The marine and atmospheric science division of CSIRO in Hobart is set to shed some of the world's most respected scientific minds and yet we haven't heard a squeak of protest from the Premier or his Liberal colleagues.
