Liberals Attempt to Buy Votes with Pensioner Payments

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader

After three and a half years paying lip service to cost of living pressure, the Liberals’ announcement of a $150 one-off payment to aged pensioners is a cynical attempt to buy votes.

Many older Tasmanians, like so many disadvantaged households, have challenges paying their electricity bills, which is why Tasmania has long had a concessions scheme in place.

UTas Liberals' Voice Welcome on Pokies

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens' Gambling spokesperson

The Greens congratulate the UTas Liberals for their stance on poker machines in Tasmania.

It's encouraging that the new generation of Liberals in Tasmania have an understanding of the significant social and economic harm pokies cause, and the impact on the lives of disadvantaged Tasmanians.

Pokies destroy lives every day in Tasmania and it's refreshing to hear conservative voices acknowledge that, and call for action.

Community Consultation on Pokies Only the First Step

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Gambling spokesperson

The Gaming Control Amendment (Community Consultation) Bill is a good first step to including the wider Tasmanian public in decision-making about where poker machines are located.  But until these machines are out of pubs and clubs, the poorest Tasmanians will still be the ones suffering.

The current character test for licensees does not take into account the social and economic harms to communities form poker machine proliferation.  This is the first step to communities having a voice.
