Destruction and Waste Define Liberals’ Forest Policy

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Forests spokesperson

The Wilderness Society's (TWS) analysis of the Draft rainforest logging plan reaffirms the rampant anti-environmentalism of the Hodgman Liberals.

Given the history of enormous waste of sawlog quality and rainforest timber in the industrial wood chipping era, the TWS finding - that 6 out of 10 rainforest trees would be wasted under the Liberal plan - rings true.

40 Years of Cash for Containers in South Australia Puts Tasmania to Shame

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens' Environment spokesperson

South Australia’s celebration of 40 years of cash for containers, and commitment to recycling and the environment puts Tasmania to shame again.

South Australia is head and shoulders above the rest in the latest set of national recycling data, as Australia’s cleanest state. The major reason for this is South Australia's 40 year old container deposit scheme, which provides refunds for cans and bottles.

Two Year Reprieve for Threatened Forests

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Forests spokesperson

356 000 hectares of the most beautiful, carbon rich forests on the planet have won a temporary reprieve from the Liberals' destructive, divisive logging plan.

A majority of MLCs saw straight through a nasty, highly political piece of legislation to reignite forest conflict, and rejected it.

The Liberals did not have a mandate to log high conservation value, carbon rich forests and reignite forest conflict but the Upper House does have an enduring mandate to be a House of review.

Wombat Culls Must Be Banned

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens' Environment spokesperson

The government’s announcement that three of the four current wombat cull permits are to be revoked comes after months of pressure from the community, in large part the Wombat Warriors, and support of the Greens in Parliament.

While the revocation is welcome, it falls far short of a real ban.

A ban on crop protection permits being issued for wombats is the only way to prevent localised extinction and ensure survival of the species.

When is a 'Ban' Not a Ban?

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader

The Liberals continue to try to mislead Tasmanians over fish farming expansion on to the East Coast.

In Question Time today, the Premier did not deny the so-called ban on fish farming in 99% of Mercury Passage was cooked up in haste late last week to take heat off Minister Rockliff in Estimates last Thursday.

Nor did the Premier deny that the dodgy looking map, that was released on Thursday morning, was cooked up in the Premier's media unit.

Forest-Destroying Minister Confirms Land Clearing Bonanza

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Forests spokesperson

In Budget Estimates today Resources Minister, Guy Barnett, confirmed he is unleashing a land clearing bonanza on Tasmania’s public and private land.

Tragically, the consequences of his reckless, destructive approach to the forestry portfolio will be felt for generations.  Threatened species will be driven closer to extinction and the release of greenhouse gases from logging and land clearing will harm future generations.

Liberals’ Forestry Mandate Climate Change Irony

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader

On the same day the Hodgman Government released its so-called Climate Action plan, they are threatening to take Tasmania to the polls over their divisive plan to log carbon-rich forests.

The irony of that won’t be lost on anyone who believes in action on climate.

In the report into the review of the Climate Change (State Action) Act, consultants acknowledge Tasmania’s emissions profile will be affected by political decisions that are made in relation to forestry and future logging.

Groom's Climate Action 21 “Plan” A Tragic Farce

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Climate Change spokesperson

Three years after taking office and abolishing the climate portfolio as well as the independent Climate Action Council, the Hodgman Government has released a woefully weak climate inaction plan.

The centrepiece of this plan is a meaningless, unlegislated 'aspirational' 2050 emissions' reduction target and a commitment to 'undertake a report' that 'assesses approaches' to an electric vehicle charging rollout.

No wonder Matthew Groom let this stinker of a plan sit on his desk for months.

Macquarie Harbour at Risk with Liberals’ Untested “Adaptive Management”

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Marine Environment spokesperson

The EPA has found Macquarie Harbour can only support a maximum of 12,000 tonnes of salmon. Tassal will have an extra 4,000 tonnes of salmon in the harbour over the next 12 months.

Instead of forcing Tassal to remove those fish, they’ve been allowed to set up tarps under cages to capture thousands of tonnes of fish faeces.
