Still Work to be Done on LGBTI Equality

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

Hundreds of Tasmanians refused to let thunder and rain dampen their rainbow spirits today at the annual TasPride march through Hobart.

With equal marriage now a reality in Australia, there was much to celebrate but as the rally heard from LGBTI young people and advocates today, discrimination, misunderstanding and exclusion remain a daily reality.

Greens Bid Farewell Robin Banks as Anti-Discrimination Commissioner

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens' Leader

The Tasmanian Greens pay tribute to outgoing Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, Robin Banks, and wish her the very best for the future.  During her time in the role, Robin gave a voice to the disempowered and a listening ear to the unheard.

As Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, Robin Banks was tenacious, deeply empathetic, clear and direct, and highly professional.  She took on the establishment and those in power where necessary, with great determination and grace.

Greens Will Fight Weakening of Anti-Discrimination Act

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

A conservative Liberal push to weaken Tasmania’s Anti-Discrimination Act will ring alarm bells among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex Tasmanians who are currently protected from offensive, humiliating, intimidatory, insulting or ridiculing comments under the law.

During debate on marriage equality last night, the Premier and a number of Liberal MPs flagged possible changes to these legal protections, allegedly in the interests of free speech.

Marriage Equality Motion Passes

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

In a largely respectful and moving conscience debate late today, Tasmania's Parliament has sent a strong message for support for marriage equality to Canberra.

The Greens Motion to give in-principle support for marriage equality passed the House of Assembly with Liberal amendments that did not affect the substance of the Motion.

In total, 3 Greens MPs, 5 Labor MPs and 7 Liberal MPs voted in support of an end to marriage discrimination for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex Tasmanians.
