Greens Table Bill to Strengthen Animal Rights

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader and Spokesperson for Animal Welfare

Tasmania’s animal welfare laws fail to protect the rights of animal to live free from cruelty and neglect, placing a heavy, disproportionate emphasis on the profits of industry.

In Parliament this week, the Greens will table an amendment Bill to strengthen the Animal Welfare Act 1993. A copy of the Bill is attached.

Greyhound Muzzling Changes Welcome

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens' Animal Welfare spokesperson

The Minister for Local Government today confirmed, as a result of community pressure on amendments to the Dog Control Act, Tasmania's greyhounds are now on the pathway to becoming muzzle free.

This change has been consistently been advocated by the Greens and it is very welcome, long overdue, news.  For far too long, greyhounds have been demonised and maligned to separate them in law from all other dogs in the interests of a cruel industry.

Hundreds Rally to End Greyhound Cruelty

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens' Animal Welfare spokesperson

Hundreds rallied on Parliament Lawns today to call for an end to greyhound racing in Tasmania. It's clear there is still serious, well-founded public concern about this cruel industry.

There's wide community support for ending the government subsidised, cruel practice of greyhound racing.  Last year the Greens tabled a petition signed by almost 3,000 Tasmanians calling for an end to the industry.

Baird as Weak as Hodgman on Greyhound Welfare

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Animal Welfare spokesperson

Tens of thousands of greyhounds will be condemned to misery and death as a result of NSW Premier, Mike Baird, caving in to the industry and reversing the ban he announced two short months ago.

Like his Tasmanian colleague, Premier Hodgman, Mike Baird has caved in to a cruel industry to allow the continued abuse of animals for profit.

Australians admire politicians with conviction and courage, even if they don't agree with their decisions or positions on any given matter.

Greyhound Report Disappointing, Greens Call for Ban

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Animal Welfare spokesperson

The majority Report of the Joint Select Committee on Greyhound Racing tabled today will disappoint many concerned Tasmanians. People who care about the welfare of animals will be upset not to see a ban on greyhound racing among the recommendations.

The Greens' Dissenting Statement recommends a ban on greyhound racing in Tasmania, as it is unjustifiable, taxpayer-funded cruelty towards animals. *
