Stewardship Certification Removal for Macquarie Harbour Salmon Not Surprising

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens Environment spokesperson

News the last two salmon companies left farming in Macquarie Harbour are pre-emptively removing their Aquaculture Stewardship Council eco-branding from products as we head into a hot El Niño summer is not surprising - especially given 1.35 million fish died there last year.

Is Archer the Fresh Start the Marine Environment Needs?

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Marine Environment spokesperson

Tasmania’s marine environment is at a crossroads, due to the rapid, unchecked expansion of the inshore salmon farming industry. Macquarie Harbour’s dissolved oxygen levels are at the same catastrophically low levels now as they were this time last year.

New Environment Minister, Elise Archer, has the opportunity to step in where her predecessor didn’t and be the fresh start the Tasmanian marine environment needs.

EPA Report Confirms Macquarie Harbour Environmental Catastrophe

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens Environment spokesperson

The EPA's monitoring data report for salmon farming in Macquarie Harbour is not surprising. It won't be news to anyone who watched the Four Corners' exposé of Tasmania's salmon industry.

The EPA reported the impact of salmon farm excrement remains "visually significant" at compliance areas 35 metres away from the exterior of lease sites.

Exposé Highlights Urgent Need for Salmon Industry Regulation

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens Environment spokesperson

The scale of revelations on last night's Four Corners exposé of the Tasmanian salmon farming industry are immense.  It exposed the State Government wilfully pushing industry expansion at the cost of long-term jobs and the marine environment.

Last night's exposé revealed the persistent refusal of government to put regulations in place for the salmon industry.  Regulations would limit fallout on the marine environment, and safeguard jobs in one of Tasmania's largest employing, regional sectors.
