Still Work to be Done on LGBTI Equality

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

Hundreds of Tasmanians refused to let thunder and rain dampen their rainbow spirits today at the annual TasPride march through Hobart.

With equal marriage now a reality in Australia, there was much to celebrate but as the rally heard from LGBTI young people and advocates today, discrimination, misunderstanding and exclusion remain a daily reality.

Mental Health Unit Rejected

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens Health spokesperson

The Australian Medical Association leaves no room for doubt in their criticism of the Hodgman Liberal government’s plan to steamroll through a new acute mental health facility. If Health Minister Michael Ferguson continues to stonewall concerns from medical professionals, he risks placing people in acute mental distress in a dangerous environment.

Contempt of Court Risk Health Minister's Fault

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Health spokesperson

The Minister for Health, Michael Ferguson, is potentially placing the Tasmanian Health Service in contempt of court.

Minister Ferguson has failed to properly resource the State's only secure mental health facility, the Wilfred Lopes Centre. Staffing levels are now so low the Centre cannot safely follow a Supreme Court order to admit a prisoner for care.

Ferguson Must Address Psychiatric Care Shortage at the LGH

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens' Member for Bass

Last week the Royal Hobart Hospital Department of Psychiatric Medicine lost their RANZCP accreditation, this week the Launceston General Hospital has been left with no permanent psychiatrist, and the Registrar fully booked.

Northern mental health patients presenting at the LGH with acute issues won’t be able to be seen by a psychiatrist or registrar. These are people who are often in serious states of mental ill health.

Ferguson’s Failure on Psychiatric Medicine at the RHH

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Health spokesperson

The Royal Australian New Zealand College of Psychiatrists yesterday formally advised the Tasmanian Health Service that the Royal Hobart Hospital would no longer be considered an accredited training hospital. The registrars currently training and working in the hospital are to be immediately redirected to posts in community mental health centres.

Labor and Liberals Ignore Health Cost of Pokies

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Health spokesperson

Tasmanians lose $200 million a year to poker machines. They devastate families and destroy lives.

The mental health cost of pokies can be serious. The recent Australia Institute report into the economic impacts of pokies in Tasmania noted 6.5% of problem gamblers had contemplated suicide in the last 12 months, and 1.5% had attempted it. *

State Liberals Must Fight for Rural Alive and Well Funding

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens' Primary Industries spokesperson

The funding insecurity around Rural Alive and Well is deeply concerning.  Many rural Tasmanians have survived depression and suicide thanks to the committed staff and volunteers at RAW.

The service RAW offer to farmers and rural Tasmanians is immeasurable.  The State Liberals must do everything within their power to make sure their funding is continued.
