Christine Milne: Champion of Tasmania

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

The formal resignation of Christine Milne from the Australian Senate marks the end of an era in Tasmania. Christine has been at the forefront of politics and the campaign to protect what makes Tasmania unique in the world for the better part of 30 years.

Canberra will certainly miss Christine's formidable intellect and immense heart, her drive and her integrity.

Mining Ban needs to be in WHA Management Plan as Government Ignores United Nations on Logging and Tenure

Nick McKim MP | Greens Parks spokesperson

The government’s claim that it is not planning to conduct ‘broad-scale logging’ in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA) does not stand up to scrutiny, and represents a continued snub of the United Nations.

The UN’s World Heritage Committee has specifically asked for all logging to be ruled out, yet the government has stubbornly refused to accede to this request.

The WHC also asked for land tenure upgrades in the TWWHA to prohibit logging and mining, which the government has completely ignored.

United Nations Slaps Down Groom on WHA Logging and Mining

Nick McKim MP | Greens Parks spokesperson

The United Nations has humiliated the state government by slapping down its plans to log and mine inside the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA).

Parks Minister Matthew Groom’s fixation with profiting from the TWWHA has blinded him to the true value of the area. It seems that if he can’t put a dollar sign in front of it, Mr Groom is just not interested.

The United Nations did not protect the TWWHA just so Mr Groom’s corporate buddies could make money from it.

US Supreme Court Ruling on Marriage Equality Increases Pressure on Australia

Nick McKim MP | Member for Franklin

The US Supreme Court's finding that state bans on gay marriage in the US are unconstitutional is a triumph for equality, and increases pressure on Australia to legislate for marriage equality.

The dominos are falling around the world at an ever increasing rate, and it's well beyond time that Australia caught up.

Marriage in Australia is a civil institution that belongs to our people, not to the churches which continue to oppose marriage equality.

Hunt Leaves State Government Isolated on World Heritage Area Logging and Mining

Nick McKim MP | Greens Parks spokesperson

Commonwealth Environment Minister Greg Hunt has left the Tasmanian government completely isolated in its plan to allow logging and mining in Tasmania's World Heritage Area.

The United Nations has come down on the state government like a ton of bricks, and now Mr Hunt has failed to support plans for logging and mining. What more will it take for the Tasmanian government to see reason?

RET Decision Appalling for Tasmania and Our native Forests

Nick McKim MP | Greens Forests spokesperson

The gutting of the Renewable Energy Target (RET) and the inclusion of native forest biomass in the target is an appalling outcome for Tasmania, and in particular will drive ongoing destruction of native forest.

With the collapse of export woodchip markets, this decision plays straight into the hands of Tasmania’s ideologically driven forest destroyers.
