Liberals’ Plan to Expand Salmon Industry at Expense of Community and Environment

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens’ Marine Environment spokesperson

The Liberals’ final Salmon Growth Plan released today is a sham, written by industry for industry. It is an audacious carve up of the Tasmanian marine environment, and provides corporate ownership without a formal legal process for the public and other stakeholders to argue their case.

The marine farming planning process in Tasmania is fundamentally flawed. Industry writes the rules and the Marine Farming Development Plans. Now we can add the State Wide Growth Plan to the list.

Okehampton Bay FinFish Removal Bill Tabled

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Marine Environment spokesperson

As Greens’ Marine Environment spokesperson, I was proud to table the Okehampton Bay Finfish Removal Bill*. Our Bill would cancel the finfish farming marine lease and marine farming licence 236 that provides authority for Tassal to farm salmon in Okehampton Bay.

The Greens’ Bill clarifies that no finfish farming can occur in the Bay in future.  It would protect the East Coast marine environment for future generations of Tasmanians.

Tassal, Liberals and Labor Need to Start Listening

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader

The Greens will move for a moratorium on fish farm expansion in Parliament this week in a bid to ensure the industry's rapid growth doesn't further degrade the marine environment and shut out affected communities.

With East Coast locals rallying on the water at Okehampton Bay today, it's obvious Tassal has no social license to operate in the clean, clear waters of the East Coast.

RTI Confirms Liberals at Behest of Salmon Farming Industry

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Marine Environment spokesperson

Three years of correspondence between Primary Industries Minister, Jeremy Rockliff, and salmon farming companies, obtained by the Greens through Right to Information, reveal an all too familiar Tasmanian tale.

Far from arm's length, the tone of most of the correspondence is one of familiarity, bullying and Ministerial acquiescence.  The salmon farming industry says 'jump' and the Liberals say 'how high?'.

ReachTEL Poll Confirms Community Opposition to East Coast Fish Farms

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Marine Environment spokesperson

ReachTEL polling released today confirms, again, the majority of Tasmanians are behind the East Coast community in their opposition to fish farming at Okehampton Bay.

Tassal is preparing to set up pens in Okehampton Bay, but salmon farming in the Mercury Passage has never had public support and the approval process was corrupted.

Okehampton Bay Boat Vigil a Sign of Strong Community Opposition

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Marine Environment spokesperson

There is strong community opposition to Tassal’s proposed salmon farm in Okehampton Bay. Tasmanians of all walks of life want our clear, clean East Coast waters fish farm free.

The Greens applaud the peaceful vigil of Chris Massie and the other commercial fishermen, anchored in Okehampton Bay.  Their protest highlights that Tassal’s plans have only had a faux scientific impact assessment, and that they never sought or received a social licence.
