Committee Should Investigate Pokies Plebiscite

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Gambling spokesperson

Brighton Mayor, Tony Foster’s suggestion that we bring the question of poker machines in our pubs and clubs to a plebiscite highlights Tasmania's distaste for pokies.

Anglicare's polling shows that around 80% of Tasmanians want pokies out of our pubs and clubs. A courageous government would heed the public will to remove these machines that leech over $200M every year from Tasmanians.

There's serious community anxiety around the placement, number and design of pokies in our suburbs.

Federal Hotels' $25M Bluff

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Treasury spokesperson

The Federal Group's announcement today that its proposed $25M development at Port Arthur will go ahead whether they have a long term extension to the pokies monopoly Deed or not, is revealing.

It's clear previous threats that the company would not be able to build without the Deed security was a $25 million bluff from a seasoned hand at these sorts of gambles.

Crucial Questions Missing from Pokies Inquiry

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Gambling spokesperson

The Treasurer's Terms of Reference for the Joint Select Committee on gambling read more like a tax-payer funded focus group than open, public consultation on one of our most serious community issues.

Clearly, the Liberals have finally noticed the level of concern in the community about the impact of pokies on disadvantaged Tasmanians. But their Terms of Reference fail to take into account removing machines from the suburbs.

Gambling Inquiry Must Answer Real Question

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

The Tasmanian Greens will move in Parliament this week to ensure the once in a generation Joint Select Inquiry in to gambling and the Federal monopoly Deed also addresses the question of whether we should have poker machines in pubs and clubs at all.

The Liberal government is working hard to deny Tasmanians the chance to express their strong  views about the proliferation of pokies in pubs and clubs, proposing a Terms of Reference to the Inquiry that does not ask this question.

Liberals Completely Fail on Pokies

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Gaming spokesperson

The Liberals' complete lack of leadership and courage was on show in Parliament today. Treasurer Gutwein squibbed his responsibility to protect Tasmanians from the harm caused by pokes, missing the opportunity for once in a generation reform.

Treasurer Gutwein delivered a sham of a policy on pokies, ignoring the community's clear wish that these machines be wound back from pubs and clubs in Tasmania.

Madam Speaker,

We meet on the land of an ancient and noble people, land that was taken from them with terrible violence and trickery on the part of the men who came before us.

We do well to remind ourselves often that this land – lutruwita/Tasmania – was never ceded by its original owners.

On behalf of the Tasmanian Greens MPs, I pay respect to the palawa/pakana people of Tasmania, to their treasured elders, past and present.
