Pokies Built for Addiction

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Gaming spokesperson

The documentary 'Ka-Ching! Pokie Nation', that aired on ABC last night reinforced what we have known for many years, the odds are stacked heavily against those who play.

Poker machines that have proliferated in Tasmania are built for addiction and high losses.

The psychology used to keep problem gamblers coming back is playing the players with the machine return percentage set at the lowest possible mark at around 85%.

Liberals Still in Bed with Federal

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader and Treasury spokesperson

Treasurer Gutwein is failing to stand up for both disadvantaged Tasmanians and the cultural icon, MONA, in his acquiescence to Federal Hotels.

It is great shame for Tasmanians that the Liberals have again sided with their old and tired bedfellows, Federal Hotels.

We are at risk of losing the economic and social benefit of MONA's Robin Hood-eqsue development because this government is entirely beholden to Federals.

Record Pokie Losses Show Liberals Lagging on Humane Policy

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Gaming spokesperson

July saw pokie losses in Tasmania jump to their highest level in 3 years, once more raising questions of how the Hodgman Government plan to support the community - all while continuing to cosy up to Federal Hotels.

With over $17Mil pumped through machines last month - almost $3Mil more than the preceding month - it is obvious that problem gambling is reaching crisis point in Tasmania.

Liberals Have No Mandate for Federal Deal

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Treasury spokesperson

The Treasurer's Federal monopoly rhetoric in Parliament today remains empty and meaningless, despite its bombastic delivery.

The simple reality is that the Liberal Government has no mandate to roll over Federal Hotels' monopoly deed.

It is clear that the Liberals have once more rolled over to Federal and are using the MONA high roller proposal as a stalking horse to extend the socially-toxic monopoly deal.

Gutwein Preparing to Roll Over to Federal

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Teasury spokesperson

In Parliament today, Treasurer Peter Gutwein made it clear he is prepared to do Federal Hotels' bidding and extend the destructive gambling monopoly deal beyond 2018.

The Treasurer is using MONA’s desire to establish a boutique, high-rollers casino as a Trojan horse to extend the Federal monopoly deal which was negotiated and signed in secret back in 2003.

Extra $4m Lost During 2014-15 Financial Year on Pokies

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Racing & Gaming spokesperson

Tasmanians lost almost $194m in the 2014-15 financial year, which equates to nearly $4m more than the previous financial year.

And this is despite the number of machines around State dropping by 39, and the number of venues, including casinos, reduced to 97 statewide.

Our population is facing even further hardship, and with heartless reforms and job losses en masse under this government, the strain being put on some households must be at breaking point.

The odds are already stacked against patrons who play the pokies, and with those machines malfunctioning the losses are set to be even greater.

The latest machine malfunction debacle comes on the back of almost $180 million worth of losses by Tasmanians on the pokies over the last year.

As a result of the deal struck with Federal Hotels, State coffers are being boosted to the detriment of the Tasmanian public.
