Liberals' Foreign Investor Tax Tinkering at the Edges

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

The Liberals are playing catch up on the growing level of foreign ownership and influence in Tasmania.

Tasmanians know foreign investors are impacting on the housing market and that almost 25% of our agricultural land has some level of foreign ownership.

Cashed up overseas buyers are not going to be dissuaded by a small tax hit.  The Liberals' policy will make no difference to housing availability, nor will it mean any less agricultural land ends up in foreign hands.

Tasmanian Liberals Rake in Donations, Declare Less than a Quarter

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

The latest Australian Electoral Commission disclosure returns reveal the State Liberals pocketed $2.39 million in political donations in 2016-17, but only declared the sources for $498 000.*

Tasmanians have no idea which vested interests the remaining $1.89 million came from, and that is a taint on our democracy.

The Liberals are the singularly most secretive of all parties when it comes to the corporate sources of their funding.  That is why they continually resist donations' disclosure reform at a State level.

Foreign Ownership and Influence

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

The high level of foreign ownership and growing foreign influence in Tasmania has got people talking across the State.

Almost 25% of our state’s agricultural land is under a level of foreign ownership, and foreign donors are making large donations to the Liberals.

The Greens want to start a rational and respectful conversation about the impact of foreign ownership and influence in Tasmania.

Greens Committed to Cleaning Up Tasmania's Democracy

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader

Tasmania has the weakest political donations laws in the country and the Greens remain determined to deliver donations' reform to clean up Tasmania's democracy.

For too long, corporate donors wanting to protect their profits have used the money they tip in to the old parties as leverage for policy or legislative outcomes that are not in the best interests of the Tasmanian people.

Liberals’ Pokies Policy the Worst Case Scenario for Community

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens’ Gambling spokesperson

The Liberals have demonstrated just how deep in industry's pocket, and out of touch with the community, they are when it comes to the poker machines in the State. Their policy will entrench the harm caused, and ignite a competitive marketplace for addiction.

The evidence heard at the recent Parliamentary Inquiry made it clear, the Liberals' policy to enter into individual contracts with gaming venues is the worst case scenario.
