Pokies-Free Pembroke Petition Tabled

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Member for Franklin

In Parliament this morning, and ahead of the Pembroke by-election this weekend, the Greens tabled a petition expressing the deep community concern about the damaging impact of poker machines.

The petition, which attracted 471 signatures in just two weeks, called on the Liberals and Labor to remove pokies from pubs and clubs. It’s past time these parties put the interests of the community first, instead of their corporate donors.

Liberals Refuse to Back Donations Reform

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader

In Parliament today, the Liberals again voted for their own political self-interest and on behalf of their corporate donors, refusing to support donations' reform in Tasmania.

In a week where the Premier has failed to be transparent about a $30 000 donation from a Chinese owned company which ASIO warned about in 2015, it is no surprise the Liberals support the status quo, where voters don't know until 12-18 months after such a donation has been made.

Premier Deflecting on Donations from Federal Hotels

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens' Gambling spokesperson

When asked again in Parliament today whether the Liberals will be accepting donations from Federal Hotels in the lead up to the next State election, the Premier ignored the question and attempted to deflect responsibility to his beleaguered State Director, Sam McQuestin.

Pokies baron, Greg Farrell, has said his company will be offering donations to both Labor and the Liberals to help them “articulate” policy.

Premier Can't Keep Pointing the Finger at McQuestin

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader

Whether it’s on shady donations from foreign owned companies or the Federal Group, or dirty tricks in Pembroke, the Premier simply refuses to take responsibility for the conduct and decisions of the political party he leads.

It has become a hallmark of Will Hodgman’s leadership going back to, and beyond, the Mantach scandal.  Every time the heat is on, he points the finger at someone else.

Premier Must Explain Why Liberals are Taking Chinese Money

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader

A report in The Australian newspaper today reveals the Tasmanian Liberals accepted $30,000 of Chinese-linked money on 30 May last year.

The Premier must explain what influence has been bought by Chinese Communist Party linked businesses which donated to the Tasmanian Liberals last year.

Both companies who donated to the Tasmanian Liberal Party have links to the Yuhu Group and its billionaire founder, Huang Xiangmo.

Liberal and Labor Parties Need to Reject Federal Group Donations

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader

The Convenor of the Tasmanian Greens, Rosalie Gorton-Lee, and I have today written to the Premier, Leader of the Opposition and their respective Party Directors and Secretaries calling on them to make a public commitment to refusing donations from the Farrell family in the lead up to, during or after the next State Election.

With the Federal monopoly Deed due to formally expire in 2018 and end in 2019, now is a critical time for our democracy.  We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity.

Pokies Deed Corruption Allegations Must be Heard by Parliamentary Inquiry

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens' Gaming spokesperson

The Greens welcome news that Tasmania Police have agreed to review their investigation into allegations of bribery and corruption following the fall of the Liberal Bethune Government in 1972 and the subsequent Labor Government’s granting of the of the Launceston casino licence to the Farrell family, which led to their pokies monopoly deed.

This is an arrangement that began in the 70’s and has led to the destruction of families, and lives, in the decades since.

Westpac's Return on Investment for Donations to Tasmanian Liberals?

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader

The Hodgman Government cannot be taken seriously on energy efficiency.

Having scrapped the Labor Green Government's large scale, free, energy efficiency scheme for households, community groups and small business, the Liberals have instead adopted a Harvey Norman style credit scheme to be run by Westpac.

All that is missing are the noisy advertisements, but the principles are identical.

Liberals Must Listen to Rev. Costello on Pokies

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens' Gambling spokesperson

World Vision Australia's Rev. Tim Costello, admired and respected by many Liberal MPs, has openly named the pokies industry as a powerful vested interest, which runs government gambling policy across Australia.  He has condemned the backroom deals done with Federal Group at public expense.

Rev. Costello’s comments echo those of the Tasmanian community, 80% of whom support the removal of pokies from pubs and clubs.
