Liberals Should Emulate Poppy Industry for Medical Cannabis

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Primary Industries spokesperson

The Poisons Amendment (Poppy Industry Reform) Bill, debated in parliament today, separates the regulation of the poppy industry between health and primary industries. The Department of Health and Human Services retain manufacture and research, while the Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment will provide regulation for production.

The success of the poppy industry in Tasmania highlights the opportunity for a similar unified approach to medicinal cannabis.

On-Island Shellfish Testing Needed

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Primary Industries spokesperson

Since 2012, the State's shellfish industries have been plagued with paralytic shellfish toxin, resulting in 50 Tasmanian farms being closed this year.

For many oyster growers, this is on top of last Summer's crippling POMS outbreak.

Currently, interstate testing delays mean shellfish are being shipped and served before health notifications are received.

Security Needed For Dairy Farmers

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Primary Industries spokesperson

Shifting consumer demands and the continued global milk glut are continuing to seriously affect dairy farmers in Tasmania.

Murray Goulburn's further cut to the wholesale milk price has left dairy farmers devastated. Many will be holding their breaths as they wait for Fonterra's announcement.

The milk price is still below production costs, and Tasmanian farmers are rightly distressed.
