State of the State Address in Reply

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

(Please check against delivery)

Madam Speaker,

We meet on the land of an ancient and noble people, land that was taken from them with terrible violence and trickery on the part of the men who came before us.

We do well to remind ourselves often that this land – lutruwita/Tasmania – was never ceded by its original owners.

On behalf of the Tasmanian Greens MPs, I pay respect to the palawa/pakana people of Tasmania, to their treasured elders, past and present.

Federal Medical Cannabis Bill Very Welcome

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Primary Industries spokesperson

The tabling of the Narcotic Drugs Amendment Bill in federal parliament today means Tasmania is one step closer to being able to lawfully cultivate medical cannabis for therapeutic use.

People who have to source and administer medicinal cannabis to themselves or their family members, knowing they are outside the law, will find some relief that this matter is being dealt with in Canberra.

Stock Feed Another Biosecurity Mess

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Primary Industries and Water spokesperson

Biosecurity Tasmania has been beset with human resources issues for some months.

The extra pressure put on the agency as higher than normal volumes of stock feed are imported into the state, again highlights this concern.

Biosecuity Tasmania need adequate staffing now and into the future to ensure the challenges of an effective biosecurity system are met.

Drought Relief Welcome, Longer Term Planning Needed

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Climate spokesperson

The Tasmanian Greens welcome Minister Rockliff's announcement of financial relief for drought stricken Tasmanian farmers but we also want to see this government recognise that hotter, drier conditions are becoming the new 'normal' and longer term planning is needed.

The $10M loan fund will provide some relief for farmers who are suffering the economic and emotional consequences of drought but it won't help our producers adapt to increasingly frequent climate-related dry conditions.

Greens Welcome Medical Cannabis MoU

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Primary Industries spokesperson

The Greens welcome the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Tasmanian and New South Wales governments. It's about time.

The MoU on medicinal cannabis trials is wonderful news, especially for Tasmanians suffering from chronic conditions. The agreement says opportunities will be explored for Tasmanian patients to participate in trials is good, and we hope the government does all it can to help those who want to be part of them.

Dogs Not Enough to Fix Biosecurity

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Primary Industries spokesperson

Biosecurity funding is still a big problem for Tasmania. This won't be solved simply by adding extra detector dogs.

Three detector dog teams are not enough to stem the flow of issues from Biosecurity Tasmania.

With budget strains, staff who are overworked and under pressure, what this vital service needs is appropriate resourcing from the government.
