State Service Public Transport Investment Needed

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Transport spokesperson

Government investment in public transport is needed if we are to make routes more viable and reduce traffic.

Providing a financial incentive for public servants to use public transport will get more people on Metro buses and make the system better for everyone.

Tasmania spends the least per person on public transport of all the States and Territories.

If we're serious about improving public transport and reducing traffic, government has to spend a bit more to get more people on buses.

Budget Lacking in Courage and Vision, Puts Environment Last

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Treasury spokesperson

Built on the mirage of a very short term surplus, the Liberals' third State Budget lacks both courage and vision.

It pays only tokenistic attention to investing in preventative health programs to keep people out of hospitals and does too little to repair the damage to public health caused by the first Abbott and Hodgman budgets.

Madam Speaker,

We meet on the land of an ancient and noble people, land that was taken from them with terrible violence and trickery on the part of the men who came before us.

We do well to remind ourselves often that this land – lutruwita/Tasmania – was never ceded by its original owners.

On behalf of the Tasmanian Greens MPs, I pay respect to the palawa/pakana people of Tasmania, to their treasured elders, past and present.

Liberals Failing on Light Rail

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Member for Denison

The Liberals have commissioned and received the result they wanted on Hobart Light Rail, effectively killing off this important public transport reform in to the foreseeable future.

It's no secret that the Hodgman Liberals have never backed Light Rail, despite the significant benefits it would bring to ease transport congestion, improve social inclusion, boost productivity, create jobs and lower greenhouse emissions.
