Gun Theft Figures Confirm Need to Dump Liberals’ Dangerous Policy

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens’ Police spokesperson

The report released today by Gun Control Australia shows firearms thefts have doubled over the last decade. Even more concerning, Tasmania showed a far higher number of guns stolen per capita than any other Australian state.

Gun Control Australia’s research shows 8% of all gun thefts happen in Tasmania, even though only 2% of the national population live here.

EPA Modelling Fails Macquarie Harbour, Tasmanian Waterways at Risk

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens’ Marine Environment spokesperson

The Director of the Environment Protection Authority has admitted modelling of salmon farming impacts on Macquarie Harbour is “flat wrong”, which begs the question of where else across Tasmania their modelling has also been unsuccessful.

The recent fish disease outbreaks, hundreds of thousands of fish deaths, and years-long lack of oxygen in the harbour speak of a regulatory system that has utterly failed the marine environment and the salmon industry it could support.

Greens Launch Plan to Clean Up Fish Farming

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens’ Marine Environment spokesperson

Tasmanian salmon farming is operating at an industrial scale, and is planning to double in size. Both Labor and the Liberals have allowed the companies to write their own rules and expansion plans for a great carve up of public waterways.

The consequences of the rapid expansion of fish farms on the marine environment and the community has been disastrous.

Tasmanians Deserve a Fair Price for Rooftop Solar

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens’ Energy spokesperson

A fair feed-in tariff for rooftop solar electricity is a must to reduce people’s power bills and stimulate clean jobs and renewable investment.  It would also secure our energy supply and help transition Tasmania to a 100% clean economy.

The Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator (OTTER) sets the price of rooftop solar, and the Greens would legislate for the Regulator to include all aspects of rooftop solar when setting the wholesale electricity price.

Community Opposed to Storm Bay Fish Farm Expansion

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens’ Marine Environment spokesperson

The Storm Bay sea-grab by Huon Aquaculture, Tassal and Petuna will see 19 million square metres of public waters privatised. Tassal is planning a new lease site with 64 pens west of Wedge Island, with Petuna moving in alongside Betsy Island and Huon Aquaculture expanding off North Bruny Island.

The Storm Bay salmon industry expansion is the equivalent to 1,138 Sydney Cricket Grounds.

Elective Surgery Fail A Terrible Record For Health Minister

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens’ Health spokesperson

The Royal Hobart Hospital's record for providing elective surgery for people who urgently need it is the worst in the country, according to Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data. Health Minister Michael Ferguson has long-praised his achievements in dealing with the elective surgery waiting list, but it seems his best effort is a miserable one.

Basslink Report Shows Public Ownership Needed

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens’ Energy spokesperson

News today confirms that the Basslink failure was due to Basslink Pty Ltd operating the cable above safe use thresholds.

This adds weight to the case for public ownership of the asset.

Private ownership of the cable has meant it has taken two years for the public to find out what caused the failure. We cannot afford to be left in the dark over crucial matters of energy security again.

Liberals’ Plan to Expand Salmon Industry at Expense of Community and Environment

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens’ Marine Environment spokesperson

The Liberals’ final Salmon Growth Plan released today is a sham, written by industry for industry. It is an audacious carve up of the Tasmanian marine environment, and provides corporate ownership without a formal legal process for the public and other stakeholders to argue their case.

The marine farming planning process in Tasmania is fundamentally flawed. Industry writes the rules and the Marine Farming Development Plans. Now we can add the State Wide Growth Plan to the list.
