Industry Regulation Needed For Salmon Investment Confidence

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Marine Environment spokesperson

Australian Ethical Investment's divestment from Tassal is a slap in the face to the sustainability brand of the Tasmanian farmed salmon industry.  It's evidence that investors have no confidence in this severely under-regulated industry.

Minister Rockliff has to step in immediately to restore investor confidence by regulating the salmon industry for long-term environmental conservation, transparency and accountability.

Rockliff Under the Spotlight on Salmon

Despite the scathing Four Corners exposé and yesterday's report of significant environmental damage in Macquarie Harbour from the EPA, the government still refuses to do what's needed to protect future jobs in the salmon farming industry.

This morning in State Parliament, the Minister for Primary Industries, Jeremy Rockliff, once again showed his blind industry expansion agenda.  What he doesn't understand is that what’s good for the environment, is good for industry.

Exposé Highlights Urgent Need for Salmon Industry Regulation

The scale of revelations on last night's Four Corners exposé of the Tasmanian salmon farming industry are immense.  It exposed the State Government wilfully pushing industry expansion at the cost of long-term jobs and the marine environment.

Last night's exposé revealed the persistent refusal of government to put regulations in place for the salmon industry.  Regulations would limit fallout on the marine environment, and safeguard jobs in one of Tasmania's largest employing, regional sectors.

The Minister for Primary Industries made it clear in Parliament today he has no intention of limiting or stopping the expansion of Tassal onto the East Coast, despite a review that’s still ongoing.

When the Greens questioned Minister Rockliff in Parliament this morning, he talked up his assessment process and defended the industry's decision to ignore it in the very same breath.
