Schools Still Hurting from Cuts

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Education spokesperson

Cuts to teacher numbers since the Liberal government took the axe to education should be at the forefront of everyone’s mind this week as the 2016 school year begins.

After slashing hundreds of positions from the Department last year, including over 150 teachers, it is difficult to believe Minister Rockliff when he announces education is “a major focus for the government this year”.

E-School is Safe

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Education spokesperson

The Greens welcome the news that Minister Rockliff has back-flipped on a previous announcement to cut staff numbers to the Tasmanian E-School.

The Greens were proud to sponsor a petition, signed by 352 Tasmanians, to keep the current staff levels at the E-School.

It's wonderful that the Minister has chosen to support students with a disability in Tasmania by keeping the 8 FTEs assigned to the E-School.

Education Minister Needs to Find Compassion for Vulnerable Children

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Education spokesperson

Education Minister Rockliff today wouldn’t rule out implementing the remaining recommendations of the Ministerial Taskforce he established, but wouldn’t commit to it either.

We have seen yet another example of the Liberal government leaving Tasmanian's vulnerable children behind, with inept Ministers struggling to cope.

Government Departments are having staff gutted from them, with the Department of Education losing an alarming 251 FTEs, including 158 teachers.
