Liberals’ Forestry Agenda Putting Swift Parrot on the Chopping Block

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens' Environment spokesperson

In their ideologically-driven rush to log the State’s native forests, the Liberals are destroying the habitat of the endangered Swift parrot. They’ve authorised logging of critical parrot habitat in Southern Tasmania, without a thought for the endangered bird.

There are only 2,000 swifties left in the wild, and the Liberals have made a deliberate decision to log these forests. We must stop the logging of Swift parrot habitat - full stop - if they are to survive.

West Coast Community Demand Tassal Remove Macquarie Harbour Waste

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Marine Environment spokesperson

The West Coast Council’s unanimous vote against Tassal dumping its salmon waste in Macquarie Harbour is a strong signal the local community won’t accept any further pressure on the harbour or its World Heritage values.

Tassal is using an untested waste capture method beneath its pens so it can stock an extra 4,000 tonnes of fish above the harbour limit previously set by the Environment Protection Authority.

Is Archer the Fresh Start the Marine Environment Needs?

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Marine Environment spokesperson

Tasmania’s marine environment is at a crossroads, due to the rapid, unchecked expansion of the inshore salmon farming industry. Macquarie Harbour’s dissolved oxygen levels are at the same catastrophically low levels now as they were this time last year.

New Environment Minister, Elise Archer, has the opportunity to step in where her predecessor didn’t and be the fresh start the Tasmanian marine environment needs.

Forest-Destroying Minister Confirms Land Clearing Bonanza

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Forests spokesperson

In Budget Estimates today Resources Minister, Guy Barnett, confirmed he is unleashing a land clearing bonanza on Tasmania’s public and private land.

Tragically, the consequences of his reckless, destructive approach to the forestry portfolio will be felt for generations.  Threatened species will be driven closer to extinction and the release of greenhouse gases from logging and land clearing will harm future generations.

Gagged Liberals' Forest Bill a Recipe for Corruption

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Forests spokesperson

In a clear signal they are afraid of Parliamentary scrutiny, the Liberals' gagged debate on their destructive and divisive high conservation value forest logging legislation in the early hours of this morning.

In using their numbers to cut short the debate, the Liberals tried to claim the legislation - which would not come into effect until 1 July next year - is urgent.  Another Liberal lie.

Liberals Required to Act on TWWHA Damage to Macquarie Harbour

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens' Parks spokesperson

Environment Minister, Matthew Groom must protect the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area from further damage from salmon farming.  The government is required to intervene under State, Federal and International law.

Dead zones from the salmon industry have reportedly spread a kilometre into the globally significant World Heritage Area. As the Minister for the Environment, Mr Groom must take action.
