The Liberals’ planned death by a thousand cuts for Tasmania’s wilderness took a step forward today.

It’s clear the Liberals have once again kowtowed to the powerful shooting lobby with their decision to open up Tasmania’s protected areas for recreational shooting, under the guise of environmental management.
Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens' Environment and Parks spokesperson
The State Budget, like the Liberals’ previous Budgets, has an obvious loser - our environment and Parks. With the exception of some extra Federal funds, it provides no additional State money.
Tourists from around the world are flocking to Tasmania because of its unique wilderness areas and natural beauty. Increased tourism in our protected areas also risks deteriorating natural assets and increases biosecurity threats if left unchecked.

In Question Time today, Environment Minister, Matthew Groom, refused to confirm Tassal will meet the EPA deadline of April 15 and have all their fish out of Franklin lease in Macquarie Harbour.
It's been 148 days since Tassal was ordered to begin destocking their lease. The order followed evidence of severe damage to the World Heritage Area in Macquarie Harbour.

Environment Minister, Matthew Groom must protect the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area from further damage from salmon farming. The government is required to intervene under State, Federal and International law.
Dead zones from the salmon industry have reportedly spread a kilometre into the globally significant World Heritage Area. As the Minister for the Environment, Mr Groom must take action.

Today marks the grim one year anniversary of bushfires that threatened Tasmanian communities and caused irreparable damage to ancient wilderness landscapes, yet the Hodgman Liberal Government continues to starve the Parks and Wildlife Service of the funds it needs to undertake effective fire management.
Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens' Tourism spokesperson
The Greens welcome Dr Tony Press’ Report into last January’s fires in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
Last summer’s dry conditions left the TWWHA, the jewel in Tasmania’s wilderness crown, exposed. Dr Press’ report confirms the government was unprepared.
Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Environment spokesperson
In their recommendations earlier this year, the World Heritage Committee expressly requested State and Federal governments protect the unique wilderness value of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
The TWWHA Management Plan, released today, contravenes that wish. It prioritises presentation to tourists, over preservation of wilderness.
