Hodgman Fails to Condemn Abetz's Cheerleading of Sexist Trump

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

In Question Time today, Premier Hodgman let down Tasmanian women and girls by refusing to condemn Liberal powerbroker, Senator Abetz, for his glowing celebration of President-elect Donald Trump's win in the U.S. election.

Mr Trump's comments about women are sexist and his behaviour condones sexual violence.

When political leaders sing his praises it sends a strong message to the community that sexism will be ignored and tolerated.

International Child Exploitation Ring in Tasmanian Schools

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Education spokesperson

It's very disturbing news that two Tasmanian schools have been named in the international child exploitation ring.

We're pleased the Department of Education are investigating. The young women and girls who've been caught up in this must be protected while any investigation is undertaken.

This kind of exploitation is a result of the persistence of misogynistic culture. It is a disrespect for women that is being abused by international predators.

Investment in Family Violence Perpetrator Program Welcome

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

Human Services Minister, Jacquie Petrusma, is on the right track with the announcement today of a funded program to treat men who are violent towards women and children.

This work is a necessary part of stemming the frightening rates of domestic and family violence in Tasmania.

The work of the community sector in delivering support, counselling, housing and access to services for abused women and their children is essential but it can't treat the causes of violence against women and children.

Madam Speaker,

We meet on the land of an ancient and noble people, land that was taken from them with terrible violence and trickery on the part of the men who came before us.

We do well to remind ourselves often that this land – lutruwita/Tasmania – was never ceded by its original owners.

On behalf of the Tasmanian Greens MPs, I pay respect to the palawa/pakana people of Tasmania, to their treasured elders, past and present.
