ASC Condemns Macquarie Harbour Salmon Farming Practices

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Marine Environment spokesperson

Tassal has breached 19 Aquaculture Stewardship Council standards in Macquarie Harbour. Dissolved oxygen levels are so low life that calls the harbour home is suffocating.

ASC has identified four ‘major’ breaches, including a failure to comply with state and federal laws. A single major breach, if not remedied, results in a loss of ASC accreditation.

Groom’s Refusal to Confirm Salmon Destock After World Heritage Damage

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Marine Environment spokesperson

In Question Time today, Environment Minister, Matthew Groom, refused to confirm Tassal will meet the EPA deadline of April 15 and have all their fish out of Franklin lease in Macquarie Harbour.

It's been 148 days since Tassal was ordered to begin destocking their lease.  The order followed evidence of severe damage to the World Heritage Area in Macquarie Harbour.

Potential Tassal TWWHA Damage Demands Federal Action

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens' Leader and Parks spokesperson

Tassal CEO, Mark Ryan, yesterday publicly told Tasmanians that Tassal's operations in Macquarie Harbour had polluted the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Late last night, this statement was retracted by Tassal.

The truth is not yet established. This is a very serious matter.

What is the truth and, given the unhealthy, cosy relationship between the Hodgman Liberal Government and Tassal, how can Tasmanians have any faith that they will be given the facts?

Government Caves to Pressure on IMAS Report

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Environment spokesperson

After significant pressure, the government has caved in and released the damning IMAS report on the state of Macquarie Harbour.

The report lays bare the government’s negligence and their contempt for the environment in their rush to bow to industry.

The IMAS report contains research from the 1980s and 90s that showed Macquarie Harbour then as one of the worst conceivable places in Tasmania for farming salmon.

Macquarie Harbour Farms Destroy World Heritage Values

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens' Environment spokesperson

The salmon industry's pollution of Macquarie Harbour is irrefutable.  By directing the destocking of salmon from the Franklin lease, the EPA has admitted the environmental damage that's occurred to the harbour and the adjoining World Heritage Area.

Last September, the same lease had 14 non-compliances issued, due to excessive pollution of the surrounding environment.  It's clear those warnings were substantially ignored.
